If you’re planning to travel within the U.S. with Gerber Tours—or even just hop on a quick domestic flight—it’s time to double-check what kind of ID you’re carrying. Starting May 7, 2025, the U.S. Transportation Security Administration (TSA) will require all air travelers aged 18 and over to present a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or another acceptable form of ID to pass through airport security.
This change has been in the works for a while (2005 REAL ID Act), but now it’s finally happening—and it could impact your next adventure if you’re not ready.
Think of a REAL ID as your upgraded license. It’s issued by your state’s DMV and meets federal security standards. Most REAL IDs have a star in the upper portion of the card. If your current driver’s license or ID doesn’t have that star, chances are it’s not compliant.
REAL ID is designed to improve security and reduce fraud—and starting this May, it’s also your ticket to hassle-free domestic air travel.
Whether you’re joining us for a leadership tour in D.C., a TRiO college visit across the Northeast, or an unforgettable performance tour to Orlando or New York, your ID is your key to getting on that plane. This especially affects students over 18, educators, chaperones, and anyone flying to a destination on one of our domestic programs.
If you don’t have a REAL ID by May 7, don’t panic—you still have alternatives. You can use:
A valid U.S. passport or passport card
A DHS Trusted Traveler Card (like Global Entry)
A military ID
A permanent resident card
A state-issued Enhanced Driver’s License (available in a few states)
But if you’re someone who usually relies on a driver’s license or state ID to fly, upgrading to a REAL ID is your easiest move.
Getting your REAL ID isn’t too hard, but it does take a little planning. You’ll need to visit your state’s DMV in person and bring:
Proof of identity – like a U.S. birth certificate or valid passport
Proof of Social Security number – Social Security card, W-2 form, or pay stub with SSN
Two proofs of residency – utility bills, lease agreement, or a bank statement with your address
Every state’s DMV has slightly different rules and document lists, so we recommend checking your state’s official DMV website well in advance.
🕒 Pro tip: Appointments may be limited as the deadline approaches. Don’t wait until the last minute—especially if you have travel planned in May or early summer!
